The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for Thursday’s deadly attack inside a Shia mosque in Afghanistan’s northern Balkh province.
On its news platform Nashir, the group said soldiers of the Caliphate managed to bring an explosive bag into what they called “a major temple” and detonated it by a remote controller after the mosque became crammed with crowds.
Islamic State, which does not regard Shiites as true Muslims, claimed in its statement that it had killed and injured more than 100 Shiites.
Earlier, local officials had confirmed that no fewer than 11 worshippers had died and about 32 wounded in the attack that hit Say Dokan, the oldest and largest Shia mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif city.
