Seven girls between 10 to 12 years old have drowned when a boat capsized in Gamafoi village of Kafin Hausa local government area in Jigawa state.
According to a report by The Nation, 10 children were travelling from Gafasa to Gasanya village in Auyo local government area for Maulud celebration when the incident happened.
Gamafoi village head, Haruna Gamafoi, reported the incident to the police.
He said: “The incident happened at around 3:30 pm when a boat capsized with girls numbering about 10 as passengers. Three were rescued while seven others died”.
It was further gathered they were in a haste to reach their destination and decided to drive a boat parked at River Gasanya themselves in the absence of the helmsman.
They were taken to Kafin Hausa General Hospital where seven were confirmed died by a medical doctor.
Jigawa Police spokesman ASP Lawan Adam, confirmed the tragedy, saying “subjects reportedly came from Gafasa village via K/Hausa LGA to Gasanya village in Auyo LGA for Maulud Celebration,” the police said.
“In a haste and anxiety to reach home considering the time, they deliberately decided to drive a boat parked at River Gasanya by themselves in the absence of Craftsman.
“They were all evacuated and referred to General Hospital Kafin Hausa F.N.A and confirmed dead by medical doctor.
“Investigation is ongoing.”
