A few minutes after the final declaration of the governorship election in Bauchi State, the state governor, Mohammed Abubakar, conceded defeat and congratulated the winner, Bala Mohammed.
In a statement by the governor’s spokesman, Ali Ali, Mr Abubakar thanked the people of Bauchi State for their support and urge them to replicate same to the incoming administration.
“I congratulate my brother, Sen Bala on this victory at the polls,” the governor said in the swift statement.
“I am delighted to note that in-spite of the intensity of the campaigns in our dear state, a peaceful election took place without bloodshed.
“Let me therefore invite the Governor-elect to join me in working out the process of a smooth transition.
“I sincerely thank the entire people of Bauchi state for their support to my administration and urge them to extend the same to the incoming administration.
“I also urge governor-elect to caution his supporters to be law abiding while celebrating since the period of campaigns is now over.”
On Monday night, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared Bala Mohammed, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, winner of governorship election.
The result was announced at 11:18pm after collating results of the supplementary election held last Saturday in 36 polling units in 15 local government areas of the state and that of Tafawa Balewa local government that was earlier withheld following a court order.
Announcing the winner, the state returning officer Professor Mohammed Kyari said the PDP candidate defeated his closest opponent of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, and incumbent Governor of the state Mohammed Abubakar having polled 515,113 against Abubakar’s 500,625.
Other candidates that participated in the election were Ali Pate of the People’s Redemption Party, PRP, who scored 46,326 votes, New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Shuaibu Ahmed who got 33,339 votes and Green Party of Nigeria, GPN, Mohammed Jumba who scored votes 23,000 votes respectively.
Mr Kyari said 31 candidates participated in the election saying Bala Mohammed of the PDP having scored the highest votes is the winner of the election.
