The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Hameed Ali on Tuesday disclosed that the service has intercepted $8,065,615 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State.
Addressing a press conference in Lagos, the C-G disclosed that the cash was intercepted in a car before getting loaded into an undisclosed airline.
He added that the money was wrapped in large brown envelopes.
According to a report by the Premium Times, the vehicle which carried the cash belongs to the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company, NAHCO, adding that the driver and a suspect had been arrested.
Mr Ali said: “From the day we seized this money, no bank has come to claim ownership. But our investigation will reveal the mystery behind the owners.”
Recall that the EFCC and the Customs had on November 29, 2016 signed a partnership to intensify the fight against economic and financial crimes in the country.
Mr Ali during the signing of the partnership agreement, said: “I can assure you we are with you shoulder to shoulder in fighting corruption. Putting heads together to work for this great nation is no longer an option”, he explained.
He continued, “What is required in an institution like yours is gut. You must have gut, be straightforward, be transparent and be an embodiment of integrity.
“These are the ingredients that will keep you going as EFCC chairman; all of these are not in short supply in your qualities,” he told the acting chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu.
