The Borno State governmennt on Thursday declared that a baby factory where young ladies with unwanted pregnancies are being harbored and their babies sold after delivery has been discovered.
The State Commissioner for Justice, Kaka Shehu, stated this at a press briefing in Maiduguri, saying the baby factory was uncovered at the popular Galadima brothel in Maiduguri metropolis, following a tip-off by members of the civilian JTF.
“On Sept. 12, 2016, we got an intelligence report by our civilian JTF in Gwange area and we mandated them to arrest a woman who delivered a baby boy but returned home without the baby. A raid was conducted on the suspected hide-out, with two babies rescued”.
“Similarly, four ladies, some persons suspectected to be sponsors, were apprehended for alledgedly conspiring to perpetrate the notorious crime”, the commissioner said.
He explained that the suspects were initially held at Gwange police outpost, but due to the nature of the case, were later transferred to the Criminal Investigation Depertment, CID.
He blamed the crime on the failure of some parents to monitor the movement of their daughters after the return of relative peace in Maiduguri.
“After the restoration of relative peace in state capital and its environs, a series of social vices, such as drug abuse, lawlessness and prostitution, which hitherto vanished following the insecurity, started re-emerging due to poor parental care”, the commissioner added.
