Members of the opposition New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, in Kano State have protested a plan by the police authorities to deploy Balarabe Sule, a former chief security officer to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, as commissioner of police in the state.

The protest is being led by a former executive secretary of TETfund and senatorial candidate of the NNPP, Baffa Bichi.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the party supporters thronged to the zonal police headquarters located along BUK Road to register their disapproval over the posting.

Credible sources on Monday told DAILY NIGERIAN that Mr Sule would be posted to Kano State alongside ACP Abubakar Shika and ACP Adamu Babayo, to superintend policing activities during the governorship and state assembly elections in the state.

Mr Sule, who was recently promoted to the rank of police commissioner and posted to Cross River State, was a deputy commissioner of police in charge of Operations in Kano for many years.

According to insiders, the three officers, who all worked together as a team, were widely believed to be partisan officers used as agents of repression against members of the opposition.

DAILY NIGERIAN further learnt that the force secretary, DIG Hafiz Inuwa, who camped in Kano to supervise election in seven North West states may be asked to move his base to Zamfara.

Mr Inuwa was the one who insisted that the majority leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, be arrested for killing members of the opposition.

Security insiders said the postings indicate the police’s plan to compromise their duty in favour of the ruling party.

Recall that in 2019 governorship election rerun, police compromised their duty by giving cover to armed thugs loyal to the ruling party to disrupt the election, and attack voters, election observers and journalists.
