The governor of Sokoto State Aminu Tambuwal has withdrawn from the presidential primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
He announced his decision at the venue of the convention in Abuja on Saturday night.
”Time has come for us to make sacrifices in the interest of our party and our nation. I have come to the conclusion that I have to step down,” he said.
He then urged his supporters to vote for Atiku Abubakar.
Mr Tambuwal said that having consulted widely across the country, he decided withdraw from the race for posterity.
“There must be a time for a leader to make sacrifice,” he said.
He said that his decision was to minimise rancour and foster unity in the party and to ensure national unity.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Mr Tambuwal was the fourth aspirant to withdraw from the race after former Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra, Nwachukwu Anakwenze and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
Reacting, Mr Abubakar, on his Twitter handle, thanked him for the gesture.
“I look forward to working with you as we unite our party and our country,” he tweeted.
