The Kaduna Urban Planning and Development Authority, KASUPDA, has demolished 50 houses at the National Eye Centre premises in Kaduna.
The Public Relations Officer of KASUPDA, Nuhu Garba, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Kaduna.
According to him, the ongoing exercise is based on a court order permitting the authority to remove illegal structures on the land belonging to the eye centre.
He said the demolition came over a land dispute which has lingered for over 20years which a Kaduna State High Court issued the right of ownership to the National Eye Centre.
He said the court then ordered trespassers to vacate the premises or be forcefully ejected which led to the demolition of houses within the premises.
Mr Garba said that the agency would continue to ensure due process in the buying and selling of landed property in the state.
“Over the years we have been announcing, warning people not to buy, sell or engage in any transaction of obtaining land in the eye centre premises but they did not listen,” he said.
KASUPA warned that anyone that bought land at any public premises would be dealt with according to the law.
Barrister Ryndeen John, who represents the eye centre, said the Federal government had paid compensation to the affected persons.
“Justice Shehu Abiri delivered the judgment on Oct. 22, 2011, so what happened at the National Eye Centre was an execution of a valid and subsisting judgment of the court after compensations were paid,” he said.
