The Action Democratic Party, ADP, has expelled Nasiru Koguna, its erstwhile governorship candidate in Kano for challenging his replacement with Shaaban Sharada.
Mr Koguna was initially elected as the governorship candidate of the party in the state before he allegedly withdrew for Mr Shaaban.
In a letter addressed to Mr Koguna and signed by the national secretary of ADP, Victor Fingesi, the party said it set up two committees to resolve the crisis in Kano and reconciled aggrieved members, but he refused to honor the invitation.
In view of his failure to defend himself and alleged misconduct, insubordination, defamatory utterances against the party and its leaders, the party therefore wielded the big stick.
“Following recommendations by the two separate committees set up by the National Working Committee (NW) to reconcile all aggrieved members of the party in Kano State during the aftermath of the party’s Governorship Withdrawal and Replacement Primaries, with a view to reconciling all members whereas, you were one of the principal actors;
“Recall that the two committees invited you, in line with the provisions of Article 51 of the Party’s Constitution in order for you to enjoy fair hearing on separate occasions but you declined severally.
“Therefore, pursuant to Articles 52 of the Action Democratic Party Constitution, the National Working Committee, having carefully reviewed and deliberated on the report of these two committees, hereby resolved as follows:
“That in view of your misconduct, insubordination, defamatory utterances against the party and its leaders, as contained in Article 52.2 of the Party Constitution, you are hereby expelled as a member of the Action Democratic Party, ADP, with effect from today, the 9th day of September, 2022.
“In the light of this, you (Nasiru Hassan Koguna) shall no longer parade yourself as
a member of the ADP and must not represent the party in any capacity.
“By this letter, you are hereby directed to hand over all the party properties in your possession to the State Chairman, Hon. Rabiu Bako with immediate effect.
“Your failure to adhere to this directive will leave the party leadership with no option than to hand you over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution,” the letter reads.
Background
Mr Koguna had written to INEC, through his lawyer Nasiru Aliyu, SAN, saying he was duly elected as the ADP candidate by the delegates of the party and did the not withdraw his candidacy.
But in response to Mr Koguna’s claims, the state chapter of the party on August 27 said he had duly withdrawn his candidacy.
Backing its claims with documents, the party said: “The party hereby sets the record straight that through a unanimous understanding, Nasir Hassan Koguna voluntarily withdrew his candidature by completing INEC form EC 118 due to the emergence of a better and willing candidate, Hon. Sha’aban Ibrahim Sharada. Mr. Koguna avowed the aforementioned fact in the sworn affidavit that he signed and the letter of voluntary withdrawal that he addressed to the party’s national chairman, and
the party has copies of the said documents in its records.
“Therefore, the party unequivocally submits that Hon. Sha’aban Ibrahim Sharada is its authentic gubernatorial candidate in Kano State, having fulfilled all the provisions of the party constitution and guidelines which includes purchase of expression of interest and nomination forms and all necessary dues.”
