Hundreds of people in Chiromawa town, located on the outskirt of Kano city, have foiled attempted abduction of an 80-year-old community leader, Yusuf Nadabo.
Mr Nadabo, who owns Chiromawa Petroleum Station, holds the traditional title of Sarkin Noman Kano, the leader of Kano farmers.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the armed kidnappers stormed Mr Nadabo’s office at the filling station located at Bakin Tasha area on Friday at 7:35pm, shooting sporadically in the air to scare away people.
According to sources, one of the members of the community sustained gunshot injuries in an attempt to confront the attackers.
“The kidnappers were not lucky that they came on a market day, and there are a lot of people and activities around the area,” an eyewitness told DAILY NIGERIAN.
“When they abducted him and his son Isyaku, they started trekking towards the cemetery area, where they hid their motorcycles. But the villagers defied the sounds of the gunshots and chanted ‘Allahu Akbar’.
“As they ran out of ammunition, and Alhaji Nadabo could not walk fast due to old age, they collected the N80,000 they found in his pocket and fled.”
Spokesman for Kano Police Command, Abdullahi Kiyawa, confirmed the incident, saying police in concert with the members of the community and local vigilante aborted the abduction.
“The matter was reported to the police around 7:57pm on Friday, and we quickly dispatched policemen to the area. With a combined support of local vigilante, as well as the members of the community, we foiled the abduction,” Mr Kiyawa, a deputy superintendent of police, said.
