The Kano State Government has barred the five emirs in the state from conferment and upgrading of traditional titles in their emirates.

In a statement issued by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Kabara, the decision is “due to certain exigencies at the moment.”

The letter, which was titled “conferment/ upgrading of traditional titles,” reads, “I am under instructions to convey the government’s directives for all the Emirates in Kano State to stop/suspend any planned activity regarding the conferment or upgrading of traditional titles due to certain exigencies at the moment.

The letter was copied to the Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye emirates.

The move is coming amidst calls by some groups for the dissolution of new emirates created during the administration of the immediate-past governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

The groups also called for the reinstatement of the deposed Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
