The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr Aminu Tsanyawa has confirmed the outbreak of a Lassa fever that killed two doctors and one patient in the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano on Monday.
Credible sources at the hospital said a doctor who assisted in the operation died a few days after the death of the pregnant woman, while an anesthesiologist who attended to the woman at the Intensive Care Unit, ICU died at the weekend.
On Wednesday, the commissioner disclosed that already, about 292 persons who had contact with the dead victims had been traced, and would be quarantined as soon as they manifest symptoms of the disease.
According to Mr Tsanyawa, the state government has since swung into action to curtail the spread of the disease by reactivating the disease emergency response center at Yargaya.
“All measures have been put to further check the spread of the disease even as millions of Naira have been set aside for the reactivation of Yargaya reactivation center,” he added.
The commissioner, therefore, called on residents and health workers in the state not to panic, as the state has taken control of the situation.
He urged the media to cooperate with the ministry in order to obtain and disseminate factual information on the situation, to prevent spreading rumours.
