The Kano State Government has set a target to generate N1 billion from the mining activities in the state.

This, the government said, is part of its commitment to improve its Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, annually.

A statement by Adamu Dabo, the spokesman for the state ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, said the commissioner, Safiyanu Kachako, disclosed this on Friday at a live radio programme monitored in Kano.

The commissioner explained that with the establishment of the ministry by the state governor, Abba Yusuf, and the mandate given to it, “plans have reached advanced stage to collaborate with stakeholders in the sector from within and outside the country to harness the state endowed solid mineral resources for overall economic development of the state.”

Mr Kachako explained that the ministry had designed an action plan that would complement government efforts in generating more job opportunities to the teeming youth and protection of both licenced and artisanal miners, host communities as well as the flora and fauna that could be affected by the mining activities.

“This could only be achieved through continuous environmental impact assessment by the ministry and ensure compliance to corporate social responsibilities by the mining firms wherever they operate within the state,” he was quoted in the statement.

The commissioner added that the ministry is currently receiving licenced and artisanal miners for registration at its location, Gidan Murtala Ground Floor.

He said the government would consider only licensed miners for registration to avoid admitting criminals into the business for the security and peace of the state.
