Kano state government has earmarked a whopping sum of N2,210,000,000 to feed thousands of primary school pupils in the state.
The Commissioner, Ministry of Planning and Budget, Musa Shanono, disclosed this at a press conference on the breakdown of the 2025 approved budget.
He said the feeding programme is to improve nutritional status, learning capacity and enrollment as well as retention of school-aged children through community participation in the state.
He explained that education, which is the top priority of the administration of Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf, had received a lion share of N205,944,608,720.87, representing 29 percent of the total budget size.
According to Mr Shanono, out of the fund, the state government has earmarked the sum of N4,603,098,664.36 for construction of new classrooms.
He added that the sum of N1,380,973,815.96 had been earmarked for procurement of pupils furniture for the newly constructed classrooms.
According to the commissioner, renovation of 100 classrooms across the state would gulp N1,010,928,516.89, while the sum of N160,000,000.00 would be spent on provision of computers and digital gadgets to Model Primary Schools across the state.
The commissioner explained that the total approved recurrent revenue for the fiscal year stands at N617,037,680,142.00, consisting of N85,863,779,890 Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, and N531,173,900,252.00 expected revenues from Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC, as against the 2024 Total recurrent revenue of N 379,762,289,575.00.
“By extension, the 2025 recurrent revenue is higher than that of the year 2024 by N237,275,390,567.00 representing an increase of 62.5%. It is equally important to note that, the projected Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) is less than that of year 2024 by N16,093,094,651.00 representing 15.8% decrease.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, the estimated Capital Receipts for the year 2025 stands at N73,717,737,521.00 While the Treasury Opening Balance is to the tune of N29,000,000,000.00,” he said.
