Eighteen civil society groups in Kano state have asked Governor Abba Yusuf to domesticate the National Women’s Economic Empowerment Policy to guide the implementation of the various interventions for women and girls in the state.
The group, operating under the banner of CSOs advocating for the domestication of the national WEE policy, disclosed this during a one-day workshop on socialization of the national women’s economic empowerment policy domestication organized with the support from the development Research and Projects Centre dRPC in Kano.
The group, however, commended the state government for its visionary leadership and proactive stance on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Their commitment to the domestication process since the administration’s inception last year is a testament to their dedication.
In a statement signed by the group chair and the President of the Network for Women Innovators, Aisha Baffa Suleiman, the groups assert that prioritising the domestication of the NWEEP and engaging stakeholders through policy socialisation is a significant step towards a more equitable, inclusive, and prosperous future for all residents of Kano State.
The group also commended the state’s Commissioner for Women, Children and Disabled Affairs, Aisha Lawal Saji, and the development Research and Projects Centre, for their unwavering commitments to the domestication process of the National Women Empowerment Policy, NWEEP, adding that their passion for domesticating the national policy underscores their dedication to advancing gender equality, promoting women’s rights, and fostering inclusive development across the state.
‘’The decision to domesticate the NWEEP reflects the government’s recognition of
the pivotal role that gender-responsive policies play in driving social progress and economic prosperity.
“By localising the NWEEP to suit the unique needs and priorities of Kano State, the government is taking proactive measures to ensure that women and girls have equal opportunities to thrive and contribute to the state’s development agenda,” she added.
The one-day workshop was designed to facilitate dialogue, consultation, and collaboration among stakeholders, including civil society organisations, CSOs, and the private sector, thereby enhancing awareness, understanding, and ownership of the policy objectives and strategies.
Through inclusive engagement, socialization efforts empower diverse actors to actively participate in shaping and implementing policies that promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
