The Kano State Hisbah Board on Tuesday said 164 beggars persons had been arrested in Kano metropolis for allegedly contravening the state’s law on street begging.

The Public Relations Officer of the board, Adamu Yahaya, disclosed in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano.

Mr Yahaya said the number comprised 121 adults and 43 children, adding that they were arrested during different raids across the city.

He said that the arrests were carried out today between 8:00 am and 12:00 noon at various locations including Civic Centre, Lodge Road, Yankura Market and Yankaba Bus stop.

“Out of the 164 beggars, 64 are from Kano while 98 are from Bauchi, Borno, Katsina, Gombe, Sokoto States and two from Niger Republic,” Mr Yahaya said.

He explained that those who were not from Kano would be repatriated to their states and urged them to find something tangible doing to better their lives.

Mr Yahaya said that Kano State indigenes among them were properly screened, counselled and thereafter released since they were all first timers.

He advised parents to watch over their wards, take good care of them and desist from street begging.
