The management of Kano Pillars FC on Monday confirmed the death of their defender, Chinedu Udoji, who died in a ghastly auto crash in Kano late on Sunday.
The Media Officer of the club, Idris Malikwa, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano that the players was involved in a car accident after visiting his former team mates at Enyimba FC in a hotel.
“This tragic accident happened along Club Road in Kano and his remains had been deposited at the Murtala Muhammad Hospital Mortuary.”
Mr Malikawa said that an official of Kano Pillars was processing a police report on the accident at the Kano State Police Command headquarters in Bompai, Kano.
Mr Udoji was voted Man of the Match in the NPFL Week 9 match against his former club, Enyimba, which ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
The defender joined Kano Pillars last season after spending seven years with Enyimba. He had also played for FC Abuja.
Also, in an interview with DAILY NIGERIAN on Monday, the Media Officer of Kano Pillars FC, Lurwanu Garu, said the 29-year old, who signed to the “Sai masu gida”, 2 years ago, left behind a wife and children.
He added that the club was in deep shock when the story of the defender’s death broke, adding that “everybody in this team is now mourning the death of this gentle man. ”
“The entire management staff, players and fans of Kano Pillars FC, condole with the family and friends of the deceased.
“We also cmextend our condolences to the Nigeria Premier League, NPL, and League Management Company, LMC, for this huge loss, ” Mr Garu said.
Speaking, a Pillars ‘s ardent fan, Sani Baballe, expressed shock with the death of the cereal defender.
According to Mr Baballe, the club has lost an “irreplaceable” centre back, adding that he performed very well in their yesterday’s match against Enyimba.
“He played very well in the yesterday’s game. He is a good defender that will be irreplaceable in the team.
“He loves Kano because he was born and brought up in Kano. Let me tell you that even the Enyimba will be very shock with his death because he was a very friendly person,” he said
