The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC, has reduced charges for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the upcoming Local Government Area elections in the state.
The charges have been described as exorbitant by opposition parties in the state, with some of them dragging the commission to court.
The chairman of the state’s electoral umpire, Sani Malumfashi, announced that the fees for chairmanship and councillorship positions are now N9million and N4million respectively.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the commission had earlier pegged the nomination fees at N10 million for chairmanship and N5 million for councillorship positions.
Dissatisfied with the KANSIEC’s position, the opposition paries went to court and obtained order restraining the commission from imposing the fees.
The court, therefore, restrained the KANSIEC from charging the fees.
Addressing journalists on Friday in Kano, Mr Malumfashi said KANSIEC complied with the order by charging N9 million for Chairmanship and N4 million for Councillorship positions.
He explained that the fee is also applicable to running mates of the chairmanship position.
“The forms are now available in banks. Candidates shout rush to the banks to purchase the forms.
“Because we are law abiding, we have complied with the court order,” he said.
