Kano State Commissioner for Information, Youths and Culture Muhammad Garba, on Tuesday said the government is still paying the over N350 million debt inherited from the Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso-led government.
Mr Garba, who addressed a news conference in his office, was reacting to “recent unguarded statements credited to Senator Kwankwaso and his protégé”.
He said KMr wankwaso’s debt was a huge embarrassment to Kano State.
“The debt cuts across contracts for uncompleted flyovers, roads, and the controversial foreign and local scholarship scheme, which amount to over N15 billion.
“There is no need engaging into unnecessary war of words with Kwankwaso and his followers because the people know their antics.
“More so, the growing unease in their already divided Kwankwasiyya camp as the 2019 elections approach confirms that they have lost political relevance. It is unfortunate that whenever they want to deceive the public, they keep on mentioning failed projects of the Kwankwaso administration.
“They claim Kwankwaso built 26 skill acquisition institutes! The question is how many of the 26 functioned at hundred per cent when he was governor? None! Some human empowerment programmes, such as the Lafiya Jari health programme, were not sustained during Kwankwaso’s administration because of lack of transparency and sincerity of purpose on the part of those who handled it.
“How many of the flyovers built by Kwankwaso were completed before the end of his tenure? How many of them were built in accordance with standards that befit an emerging megacity as Kano? Contractors handling the projects were not duly mobilised. The said flyovers were abandoned, all of which were inherited by Ganduje’s administration, and are being built in line with the policy of continuity.
“Contractors, who left the sites at Maitama Sule University because they were not mobilised have been mobilised. Today, Maitama Sule University is undergoing a face-lift. Millions are being spent by the Ganduje administration to redesign Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and place it on the front pew of world class specialised higher institutions.
“It still baffles my imagination why certain questions should not be raised against someone who looted Kano and left over N350 billion debt for our beloved state to move backward.”
