The drama that ensued for about two days after a lion escaped its cage at Kano Zoological Gardens has recorded a happy ending, with the big cat returning to his cage voluntarily.
The lion escaped on Saturday night while zookeepers were trying to put it back to its cage after agricultural show outing in Nasarawa State.
The managing director of the zoo, Saidu Gwadabe, confirmed the development to DAILY NIGERIAN, saying the lion was lured back to its cage on Monday morning after its keeper, Musbahu, lured it with a goat.
“Already there is existing human-animal bonding between Musbahu the zookeeper and the lion. So the zookeeper tied a goat in his cage and whispered to the lion from a distant edge of the cage.
“As the lion’s attention was diverted by the keeper, another ranger went and locked the cage. That is how the operation came to an end,” Mr Gwadabe said.
Counting their losses, Mr Gwadabe said the lion had killed two ostriches and four goats.
