The Kano Road and Traffic Agency, KAROTA, has confirmed the arrest of two trucks conveying over 2,000 crates of alcoholic drinks.
In a statement by its spokesman, Nabilusi Abubakar in Kano on Thursday, KAROTA said the beer was worth over N50 million.
Mr Abubakar said the managing director of the traffic agency, Baffa Dan’agundi, also awarded the officer who intercepted the trucks N1 million after refusing a N500,000 bribe to release the confiscated goods.
According to Mr Dan’agundi, the state government had banned the importation and consumption of alcohol in the entire state.
He warned that KAROTA and its sister agency, Kano State Consumer Protection Council, CPC, under his leadership, “will not spare anyone caught in the act of supplying such drinks into the state.”
He said the MD applauded the patriotic officer and charged others to emulate him, calling on them to consider the safety of lives, property and well-being of the state before anything else.
Meanwhile, Halilu Jalo, the officer who arrested the trucks said they were intercepted following a tip off by some good samaritan.
He said “we intercepted the trucks on Obasanjo Road heading to Sabon Gari Area of the State.
“They offered me a bribe but I refused to take it because I know the damages alcohol causes to lives.
“It is unislamic to consume alcohol and also against the teaching of Islam to take bribe, these made me to do the right thing,” he was quoted as saying in the statement.
Mr Dan’agundi further called on the general public to always support his agency for the security and safety of the state.
