“I, therefore, implore you to be of good behaviour and make the best use of this opportunity to acquire education and relevant skills, needed to live a quality life in the future.
“While you are here, be receptive to everything that is good and reject any negative actions that will destroy your life.
“Say no to cultism and drug abuse, because they will only lead you to self-destruction. Say no to examination malpractice because if caught, we will expel you,” the vice-chancellor warned.
The don urged the students to study hard to graduate with good degrees that would earn them favour in the labour market.
He equally advised them against the wrong deployment of the social media, adding that over-concentration on WhatsApp or Facebook would only earn a student a pass or third-class degree.
“And believe me, if you are not lucky, a pass or a third-class degree may only fetch you job as a security or a cleaner in this highly competitive labour market,” the professor advised.
The vice-chancellor said that the institution was committed to providing a world class quality teaching and learning environment, where every student would acquire the needed knowledge and be what he or she wants to be.
Earlier, Dr Jamil Harun of the university’s College of Medicine, advised the new students against all forms of drug abuse, because it destroys lives.
Harun gave the advice in a paper he presented on the occasion.
It is entitled, “Drug Abuse among Adolescent in Nigeria and Strategy for Counselling.”
He said that many Nigerian youths were involved in one form of drug abuse or the other.
According to him, indulging in such act comes with destructive consequences that affect the mental, physical and psychological development of youths, including adult.
“Anyone that abuse drugs is exposing himself or herself to physical illness, mental retardation, limb abnormalities, psychiatric illness, sleeping disorder and poor perception among other life-threatening risks.
“I urge you to stay away from drug abuse, so that you could have a stable mental state of mind to study hard, live a healthy life and contribute to national development,” he said.
