Katsina State Government, in collaboration with the National Automotive Design and Development Council, NADDC, has established a modern mechanic training centre in the state.
During the foundation laying ceremony of supporting facilities at the premises of the centre on Tuesday, Governor Aminu Masari said it would assist in training mechanics on modern car repairs.
According to him, the state government has provided the land, while the council constructed the building and will provide the centre with all the needed facilities.
The governor said that the centre would provide the mechanics across the state with modern technology for addressing automotive issues, and also transform their lives.
“The world is moving and it’s moving fast, it’s no longer a spanner with a hammer; it’s now the work of computers and brains to address issues, especially in automobiles.
“That’s why today, you can see an 18-year old-driving a 45 and 60 turner and maneuvering it with only one hand, because technology has changed over a period where the steering system was not hydraulically controlled.
“For you to remain relevant, you have to learn modern skills, otherwise you will be left idle with your spanners and hammers doing nothing or very little.”
He explained that the ceremony was to lay the foundation for the construction of three blocks of hostel accommodation with a capacity of about 360 people.
According to Mr Masari, the decision to embark on the construction of the hostel, mosque and other structures was to encourage participants from far away local governments to feel comfortable during training.
In his remarks, the Director General, DG, NADDC, Jelani Aliyu, commended the government for its commitment towards providing its citizens with skills despite the economic challenges.
Represented by the NADDC Northwest Coordinator, Abubakar Mudi, Mr Aliyu assured the state government of its continued support.
Also in his response, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Automobile Technician Association, NATA, Abbati Muhammad commended the effort.
He explained that the centre would enhance their knowledge and experience in carrying out their work, assuring of proper use of the centre.
