Sokoto Police Command has said that thirteen people were killed following a clash between suspected bandits and members of a vigilance group in the Isa Local Government Area of the State on Friday.
However, the police spokesman in the state, Cordelia Nwawe, who confirmed the attack said only eight people died, including the kidnap victim.
The clash was said to have occurred after the bandits shot dead an elderly man at Dan Tasango village in Gebe district, when an attempt to kidnap him failed.
Moves by members of the vigilance group to apprehend the bandits resulted in a gun duel as they were ambushed by the hoodlums along Kamarawa-Bafarawa axis.
An eyewitness told Northern City News that the bandits killed seven members of the group while five suspected criminals were equally felled during the firefight.
Mrs Nwawe, a deputy superintendent of Police, disclosed that investigation was still on going to unravel the perpetrators, “but pointers from preliminary findings indicate that the bandits were from neighbouring Zamfara State.”
“The Commissioner of Police was in the village where he consoled the families of the victims of the attack and assured them of our determination and commitment to fish out the perpetrators,” she stated.
