Kidnappers on Sunday killed a traveller, Sheriff Yazid, and kidnapped his wife, Jamila Bello, on Abuja-Kaduna expressway.
Dozens of suspected kidnappers have been arrested in the past few weeks, following the deployment of crack teams comprising Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Squad, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Intelligence Response Team, Special Tactical Squad, Force Intelligence Branch and police helicopters.
Family source said the couple was travelling to Kaduna from Abuja when their car broke down near Kaduna tollgate.
“The kidnappers killed Sheriff on the spot and took his wife to their hideout in the bush,” the source told DAILY NIGERIAN.
The kidnappers had initially demanded N20million for the release of the deceased widow, but they later slashed the ransom to N10million.
“I could not actually say how much ransom was eventually paid, but she was released on Monday evening after payment of millions of naira.
“It was tragic moment for the family. Sheriff was killed on their sixth year marriage anniversary,” she added.
Spokesman for Kaduna State Police Command, Mukhtar Aliyu, could not be reached for comment.
