3 killed as fire breaks out at northern Iraq refugee camp

Fire broke out at a refugee camp in northern Iraq, killing three people in the early hours of Wednesday, an official said.

Fire broke out at the Bersive camp, located in Zakho area, in Dohuk province.

A father, his son and daughter died when the tent they lived in caught fire, Zakho’s health department spokesman Amir Ali told dpa.

At least five other refugees were injured.

A civil defence official said the fire was caused by an electrical fault and an investigation was ongoing.

Bersive camp is one of several in the northern Kurdistan region that mainly host members of Iraq’s Yezidi minority, who fled Islamic State violence.

Fires due to electrical problems have been previously reported at camps in Zakho.
