There is indication that Abba Kabir Yusuf, the son in-law to a former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, may be the dark horse that will emerge as anointed candidate from Kwankwasiyya camp for PDP governorship ticket.
The former governor, serving senator and presidential hopeful holds sway as the party leader in Kano since his defection to PDP on July 24.
The endorsement of the Kwankwasiyya candidate would be announced at the weekend in Kaduna, Mr Kwankwaso’s political haven outside Kano.
DAILY NIGERIAN had reported that the two top contenders in the Kwankwasiyya camp, Hafiz Abubakar and Salihu Takai, have been pencilled by the leader for senate contest.
While supporters of Hafiz Abubakar are tacit in expressing their resentment to the decision, Mr Takai’s supporters appear loud and clear in their resolve to challenge the decision. Mr Takai will go for governorship ticket screening on Saturday.
But inside sources told DAILY NIGERIAN that Mr Kwankwaso has asked his son in-law, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to collect tax certificate and make his documents intact in preparation for the nomination.
DAILY NIGERIAN reliably learnt that Mr Yusuf collected his tax clearance certificate on Thursday, September 13.
“Abba has made his tax clearance document ready at Oga’s (Kwankwaso) instance. There is strong indication that he wants to give him the governorship ticket,” an inside source in the Kwankwasiyya camp said.
“Abba is neither contesting for House of Representatives nor State Assembly because the current Rep. member, Garba Diso, is returning unopposed in the Kwankwasiyya camp. There is indication that the assembly ticket will be given to BK Dandago, since Oga ruled out Yusuf Babangida Dawo-dawo.
“Another possibility is that Kwankwaso may decide to return Hafiz Abubakar as candidate and then ask Abba to contest for Kano Central senatorial ticket. Remember, Kwankwaso has made it clear that he is not interested in returning to the Senate. So no issue of ‘holding’ the senate ticket for Kwankwaso (as he did in 2014) should he (Kwankwaso) lose the presidential ticket.
“But in all the scenarios, I am more aligned with the possibility of fielding Abba as the governorship candidate. That is just the game plan now.”
But insiders say Mr Yusuf as a candidate is a recipe to failure in Kano. According to sources, Mr Yusuf is “arrogant, overbearing and contemptuous” politician who may not be accepted by the people.
“With Abba as a candidate, there must be implosion, rebellion and deep resentment in the Kwankwasiyya camp,” an insider told DAILY NIGERIAN.
