The Lions Clubs International (LCI ) has flagged off a campaign for sight preservation, awareness and action journey, by conducting a free eye screening, prescription of glasses and giving medicated glasses for minor eye defect cases to Nigerian citizens.
This campaign started with a rally from Lagos Airport hotel to the Lion club house Ikeja, canvassing for individuals in the community to come have a free eye test.
Speaking at the club house, an Optometrist, Dr Grace Awoshope, said,”The eye is the window of the body that shows one the world, the eye is a very essential part of the body because they are the organs of vision . They detect light and convert it into electro-chemical impulses in neurons”.
“In higher organisms, the eye is a complex optical system which collects light from the surrounding environment, regulates its intensity through a
diaphragm , focuses it through an adjustable assembly of lenses to form an image, converts this image into a set of electrical signals, and transmits these signals to the brain through complex neural pathways that connect the eye via the optic nerve to the visual cortex and other areas of the brain”.
Awoshope further stated that “Light is focused primarily by the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, which acts like a camera lens, the iris of the eye functions like the diaphragm of a camera, controlling the amount of light reaching the back of the eye by automatically adjusting the size of the pupil and the eyes crystalline lens is located directly behind the pupil and further focuses light. Through a process called accommodation, this lens helps the eye automatically focus on near and approaching objects, like an auto focus camera lens.
She however advised that, “Anytime you notice any issue of the eye go straight to the hospital or if it complicated, wash your face with clean water and add little eye drop then go to the hospital. One should avoid using sharp object on the face , parent should avoid slapping their children or hitting their children on the face, teachers should avoid the use of cain on children, We should also be carefull about the way we hold our umbrella, so that we can not mistakenly put it unto somebody’s eye. Adding that ladies should be careful about he way they go about fixing eyelashes , contact lens in any eye accessories because the eye is very sensitive ., the only way its tells us that its uncomfortable is by dripping out water or going red.
The District Governor of Lions Club, Ikeja local government, Lion Dr Funke Adebanji said the free eye test was a contribution of the body to the people helping them fight against defects.
She added that the body is a secular, non-political charity service organisation known and seen all over two hundred and six countries in the world for the need of the people.
“We look after the needy but in doing that we have specific areas of focus, vision is one of our main focus, things that affects the sight. We also do screening, through this process we find out about eye defects and things that can be attended to instantly like the distributions of glasses. In the process of screening we engage doctors and nurses who are expert in that area to carry out the screening and also prescribe glasses to them. Some might go beyond ordinary glasses , some might need surgery we refer them to were we can follow them up and assist them to carrying the operation by paying less or subsidising the amount”.
She also noted that, “We feed those who are hungry, we take gift to the needy and we visit children’s homes and empower our youth in order to avoid the hanging of themselves or becoming irresponsible”.
