• CBL honours Ambode as West wins All Stars game
It was one of the best moments of the ongoing Continental Basketball League (CBL) Lagos Madness when the West defeated Central stars 119 to 113 to win the All Stars Challenge game held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium at the weekend.
The game, according to the organisers, was put together in honour of the host state, Lagos, and other supporters of the league.Speaking on the game, CBL’s Chief Executive Officer, Ugo Udezue noted that the league was aimed at bringing the best of basketball stars to Africa to help in developing the sport in the continent, saying the league would keep growing until it gets to the desired level.
He presented awards to the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode and other top dignitaries in the state for their immense contribution to basketball and sports development in the country and called on basketball lovers to key into the league to give Nigeria a new dawn in the game.
At the All Stars game, Nigeria-born America-based Ikenna Mbamalu, who plays for Lagos Warriors and American-born Mark Hill, who plays for Eko Kings gave good account of themselves, leading the star-studded West to a resounding victory over the Central Stars, led by City Stars’ dangerman, Mayes Jordan and Libreville Izobe Dragons’ Anthony Jacquatte.
In other contests of the day, Eko Kings’ Thomas George won the dunk contest, which was keenly contested for by Wamukota Bush also of Eko Kings, Nissao Stephane of Lagos Warriors, Doug Thomas and Olatunji Graham, both of City Stars.In the three points contest, one of the tournament’s favourite star, Mayes Jordan, stole the show as he defeated other five contenders to win the event.
Speaking at the end of Sunday’s games, Mayes revealed he was delighted to be in Africa to contest in the CBL, saying that the continent has enough talented basketball stars take the game to the highest level.
The semifinal and final matches of the CBL tournament will hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium this weekend with Libreville Izobe Dragons, Yaoundé Giants, Lagos City Stars and Eko Kings fighting for the title.
