The chairman of the independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, has said that sensitive electoral materials will no longer be ‘routed through’ the Central bank of Nigeria, CBN.

He also specifically notes that beginning from the Ekiti State Governorship election, INEC will not keep its sensitive materials with the CBN.

Some elections stakeholders, especially the civil society groups, have raised serious concern about the sanctity of elections materials kept with the CBN, after CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, reportedly joined the APC and indicated interest to contest for president.

The INEC chairman however noted that the electoral body has never had an issue with the CBN since the partnership started, but due to “current circumstances”, an alternative will be found.

The INEC chairman stated this while responding to a question on Saturday at an election dialogue, ‘The Electorate’, organised by Enough is Enough, EiE.

“I want to say that since INEC started this collaboration with the CBN, we have never experienced a single issue with the movement of materials, never.

“But we appreciate the current circumstances, and for that, pending a time we will find alternative, that for Ekiti the materials will not be routed through the CBN,” he said.
