A first Republic minister and former Nigeria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nation, Maitama Sule, is dead. He was 88.
Maitama Sule, who holds the traditional title of Danmasanin Kano, died at As-Salam International Hospital, Cairo.
Family sources told DAILY NIGERIAN that his remains would be flown to Kano around 2pm on Tuesday, while the funeral prayer would take place at 4pm at Emir’s Palace, Kano on the same day.
Late Maitama Sule was appointed minister of Mines and Power in 1959 at the age of 29.
As the first oil minister, he ordered Shell to surrender some of its concession in order to provide competition in the system and boost efficiency.
His efforts brought Agip and other players into the sector, got Nigeria into OPEC, started the first refinery and established National Oil Company (now NNPC).
