Millions of immigrants into Nigeria who are yet to have their biometric data captured are facing deportation as the six-month amnesty given by President Muhammadu Buhari will elapse in January, 2020.
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, Muhammad Babandede made the disclosure on Saturday at the Passing-Out Parade of the 3rd Conversion Course of the Nigerian Immigration Training School, Kano.
Mr Babandede said although the law allows the Service to register any foreigner on arrival, President Buhari had given them a six-month amnesty for the registration of the foreigners who had not been registered and are staying in the country.
The comptroller-general, however, warned that, “any foreigner who fails to register by January, 2020 would face penalty and the penalty is very clear, which means deportation”.
“People are registering and anybody who overstayed in Nigeria could register again and be forgiven for the over-stay.
Mr Babandede, therefore, called on the foreigners who are yet to be captured to do so to save themselves from the embarrassment of being deported or charged with other possible offences.
