The Jigawa State High Court, sitting in Ringim Local Government has on Tuesday sentenced two men to death for committing culpable homicide, a statement signed by Zainab Santali, spokesperson of the Jigawa State Ministry of Justice said.
According to the statement, the convicts are Mustapha Idris of Daneji village in Ringim Local Government and one Jamilu Harisu from Muku Village in Garki Local Area of the state.
The statement, obtained by DAILY NIGERIAN on Wednesday, said Mr Harisu was sentenced to death for killing his biological father, Harisu Bako, in a farm.
The incident happened on July 22, 2019 when Mr Bako, a 70-year-old man, was working on his farm but Mr Harisu who happened to be his biological son, sneaked into the farm and hit the deceased in his head with a hoe, an injury that led to his death.
The persecution team, led by Jigawa State Attorney General, Dr Musa Aliyu, produced four witnesses, tendered confessional statement and a medical report in proof of the case.
The defendant on the other hand did not produce any witness.
In his judgement, Justice Ahmed Kazaure ruled that the prosecution counsels had proven their case beyond reasonable doubt, thereby sentencing Mr Harisu to death by hanging in pursuance to Section 221(b) of the Jigawa State Penal Code Law.
Similarly, Mr Idris was arrested on January 12 for slitting the throat of one Nafisa Hashimu of Daneji village to death.
In proof of the case, the prosecution counsel called four witnesses and tendered two documents.
The defendant, however, denied the charges, claiming that he was in Abuja when the incident happened.
But Justice Kazaure of the court ruled that the prosecution counsel had proven his case beyond reasonable doubt.
He, therefore, declared that Mr Idris had committed premeditated homicide and sentenced him to death under the Section 221(a) of the Jigawa State Penal Code Law.
