Meningococcal disease kills 1 in Mongolia – Report

Six cases of meningococcal disease have been reported in Mongolia since the year began, local   reported on Thursday, citing the National Centre for Communicable Disease (NCCD).

The report further said that one of the victims has died.

“The patient died after arriving too late at the hospital,’’ Choirog Urtnasan, a doctor at  NCCD, told daily newspaper Udriin Sonin.

Urtnasan called on people to go to health facilities as soon as they felt sick.

Meningococcal disease is caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis and can cause infections in the lining of the brain or in the blood, or both.

It has a high mortality rate if untreated but is vaccine-preventable.

The common symptoms of the disease include sudden fever, vomiting, nausea, headache, stiff neck, backache and increased sensitivity to light.
