A Kano High Court sitting at Audu Bako Secretariat on Friday sentenced one Saude Yahaya to three years in jail for strangling her own baby.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that Ms Yahaya, a single mother and resident of Utai town in Wudil local government area, was in 2013 impregnated by her lover who promised to marry her after delivery.
However, it was gathered, when she gave birth to a baby boy the lover ran away, a situation that prompted her to strangle the baby and threw the corpse into a latrine.
According to the charge sheet, Ms Yahaya had on January 26, 2014 held the baby tight to his chest until the child stopped breathing.
However, the prosecution said the convict committed the act of culpable homicide not punishable by death.
The prosecutor, Fatima Ahmed, said the convict held the convict suffocated the child by holding him so tight to his chest, leading to his death.
After that, according to the prosecutor, the mother threw the corpse into a latrine.
The convict, in her response, told the court that the allegations against her were not true.
On conviction, the defence counsel, Faiza Yusuf of the Legal Aid Council, Kano, urged the court to temper justice with mercy.
The court, presided by Justice A. T. Badamasi, therefore, ordered Ms Yahaya to pay N50,000 as a fine or proceed to serve the three-year jail.
