The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has expressed dismay over the invasion of Urban Radio 94.5 FM in Enugu by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on October 14.
The incident which occurred during a live broadcast of the program “Prime Time,” was reportedly aimed at arresting the program’s presenter, Favour Ekoh.
But in a statement on Monday, Susan Obi, NBC’s Director of Public Affairs, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of broadcasting in Nigeria.
NBC described the incursion as a violation of professional broadcasting ethics, especially considering it took place during a live show.
The commission stated, “The approach for which the arrest was carried out is improper.
“This action is regrettable, considering the impact of the broadcast media on the Society.”
The NBC further acknowledged the EFCC’s role in combating financial crimes but criticized their method, warning that it, “could have led to public disorder, disturbance, aggravate mass panic and hysteria.”
The commission also issued an apology “to the listening publics, the people of Enugu State, and the entire Broadcast Industry for the incident”.
The NBC implored the public to remain law-abiding as legal proceedings unfold and urged media professionals to uphold ethical standards in their work.
