The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kaduna State Command, on Thursday says its operatives have arrested 420 suspected drugs dealers and seized 10, 599.97kg illicit drug in the state.
The state NDLEA commander, Ibrahim Braji, said this in Kaduna at a media briefing to commemorate the International Day for the fight against Drug Abuse and Trafficking.
The News Agency of Nigeria report that the 2023 theme is “People First, Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention”.
Mr Braji said the arrests and seizures were made from January to June 22, 2023.
He said out of the 420 suspects, 171 were charged to court, of which 59 have been convicted and 190 counseled.
“The command also rehabilitated 34 clients within the period under review”, he said.
The commander said the 10, 559, 97kg of drugs seized included Indian Hemp, Heroin, Cocaine, Methamphetamine, Tramadol and other psychotropic substances.
Mr Braji explained that this year’s campaign was aimed at combating stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs.
“This year’s world drug day is a call to raise awareness about negative impact of stigma and discrimination on people who use drug and their families.
“Also raise awareness about the importance of treating people who use drug with respect and empathy by offering alternatives to punishment and prioritizing prevention.
“Many people who use drug face stigma and discrimination which further harm their physical and mental health and prevent them from accessing the help they need,” he said.
The commander appreciated the Kaduna State Government, traditional rulers, Non-Governmental Organisations and the media for their immense support to the fight against illicit drugs and trafficking.
“We are calling on the public to continue supporting the eradication of drug abuse and trafficking in their communities and the state by providing vital information to the command at all times,” Mr Braji said.
NAN reports that anti-drugs awareness campaign will be taken to worship, motor parks and schools as part of the celebration.
