National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, has handed over 97 parrots to Kano Zoological and Wildlife Management Agency.
Speaking during the handing over, held at the zoo in Kano on Wednesday, Northwest Zonal Director of NESREA, M.O Raheem said the birds were seized by Nigeria Customs Service and handed over to the enforcement agency.
According to him, the Kano zoological garden would serve as custodian of the parrots pending the outcome of investigations.
Responding, the acting managing director, Kano zoological garden, Amina Dankade, commended the effort of Nigeria Customs Service and NESREA for what she described as a “good job.”
She also commended the two law enforcement agencies for “dedication in discharging their responsibilities”.
Mrs Dankade pointed out that the state government is committed to curtailing illegal hunting and deforestation.
She urged people in the state to complement government’s efforts by reporting unpatriotic Nigerians engaged in smuggling wild animals to neighboring countries.
