More than ten people were, on Wednesday, injured in a clash amongst between members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo.

The clash was as a result of an attempt by some factional members of the union to hijacked its affairs.

Sources told journalists that the enraged members, who were armed with dangerous weapons, ‎shot repeatedly in the air to scared away onlookers, as they attacked one another.

Daily Times gathered that the crisis paralysed business and economic activities in the town as residents scampered for safety.

A source disclosed to our correspondent that the crisis broke out when a man, who was identified as “Jungunnu”, a factional leader, declared himself as its new chairman.

‎‎The source who later pleaded for anonymity said the factional leader allegedly led some troublesome members branded as thugs in the union to Akure car park where they purportedly attacked union members in bid to take over its leadership.

The scuffle, it was learnt, spread to Ehinogbe area of the town where the fight became violent, but for the timely intervention of policemen normalcy was quickly returned.

The branch chairman of the NURTW, Mr. Kolade Jasper, expressed disgust at the incident, adding that he was yet to receive notification letter from the national leaders indicating the expiration of its tenure.

Jasper added that the man identified as “Jungunnu”, who was parading himself as a factional leader of the union was never a bonafide and registered member.

He, however, pleaded with Governor Olusegun Mimiko to urgently intervene in the crisis rocking the union.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident and noted that the command was investigating it, with an appeal to the warring factions to be peaceful.
