An early morning inferno has destroyed goods worth N10 million at the popular Ikare Junction in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo state.
Eyewitnesses told journalists that the fire destroyed shops stocked with food stuffs and electronics, among other goods.
Hundreds of sympathisers who gathered at the scene were seen consoling the affected traders who were lamenting about what have befallen them.
Daily Times learnt from some affected traders that a power surge from one the affected shops caused the heavy inferno.
A trader, Mr. Frank Mbaga, said the electricity supplied to the areas had been unstable for some days in the area.
“I think that was the cause of the incident. We have informed the officials of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) but they refused to turn up to solve that challenges,” he said
Another trader, Beatrice Chukuwa, also expressed her disappointment in the fire brigade men stationed in Owo, noting that a distress call to its officers was not responded to.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Owo led some officers to the scene to investigate the incident.
Joseph said although no life was lost, the police would find out the cause of the fire
