The Director-General, National Agency for the Great Green Wall, NAGGW, Yusif Maina-Bukar, said the agency has adopted a new method of watering plants to enhance afforestation.
Mr Maina-Bukar announced this at a meeting with the agency’s field officers of the frontline states, held in Kano on Sunday.
He said the meeting would exposed the personnel to new plant watering method, which retains moisture, especially during tree planting processes.
The DG also led the members of management staff and the field officers to a demonstration on the new technique of planting trees, popularly known as the “half moon method”.

According to him, the method helps retain moisture on the soil so that trees can grow efficiently.

“This method has been in practice in many African countries like Burkina Faso and many others,” he said.

He, however, noted that the most important thing was the introduction and the use of a gross water box, which retains water from three to five months, and could be used many times.

“We need to implore methods in which we can make use of our flowing water efficiently, especially that we need to conserve water,” he said, adding that the meeting would go a long way in guiding the personnel on how to effectively implement ideas and formulations of the Agency.

The DG reiterated the agency’s commitment towards addressing drought and desertification in the affected states.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the NAGGW frontline states include Adamawa, Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi.
