Nigerian govt empowers 3,953 women, youth in Yobe

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development has empowered 3,953 poor and vulnerable women and youth in Yobe with N20,000 each.

Sadiya Farouq, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs disclosed this while inaugurating the disbursement on Wednesday in Damaturu.

Mrs Farouq who was represented by Director, Humanitarian Affairs, Ali Grema, said that the Grant was meant for 3,953 vulnerable groups across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.

She said that 70 per cent of the beneficiaries were women while the remaining 30 per cent were youth.

Mrs Farouq also explained that the Federal Government had recently inaugurated the Government Enterprise Empowerment program, GEEP, 2.0.

She said that the programme promotes access to fund and financial inclusion under its three main products – tradermoni, marketmoni and farmermoni.

“To this end, the tradermoni loan of N50, 000 is targeted at uplifting the under-privileged and youths between the ages of 18 and 40.

“The marketmoni loan also of N50, 000 is for underprivileged and marginalised women such as widows, divorcees and other vulnerable groups.

“The farmermoni loan of between N50, 000 and N300, 000 is designed for small-scale farmers to improve their agricultural productivity and inclusion into commercial farming,” she explained.

In a remark, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe said the gesture would go a long way in complementing government’s efforts towards rebuilding the livelihood of people of the state.

He thanked the federal government for the initiative.

Mr Buni was represented by Isa Bukar, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.
