The member representing Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency, Haruna Maitala has offered registration fees to about 500 prospective candidates of the West African Examination Council, WAEC, examination in Jos, Plateau State.
While presenting the educational support on Wednesday at his constituency office in Jos, the lawmaker said education is a top priority in the list of his programmes.
Represented by his senior legislative aide, Abdulqadir Hassan, the lawmaker said about N12.05m has been earmarked for the phase one of the educational support scheme.
“This is a tremendous project and we are here to assist the less-privileged in order for them to register for their SSCE,” he said.
The lawmaker said the selection of beneficiaries was meritoriously done from across the 30 electoral wards of his constituency, especially those that could not be able to pay for themselves.
“We are just starting and we will after this select others to register for the joint admission and matriculation board (JAMB) examination” he disclosed.
Mr Maitala further said that within his budgetary strengthen, his constituency office would soon start giving out scholarships to the less-privileged students.
“It is also part of our programmes to renovate some dilapidated structures and also provide learning materials to some indigent students within my constituency,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Zainab Ibrahim expressed their appreciation over the gesture, saying it comes at a time they were having dificulty raising money for the registration.
Ms Ibrahim said: “I was picked to come for free registration of SSCE paid by Hon. Haruna Maitala. Before now I was thinking on how to get the money to pay for my registration.”
Also speaking, the Jos North vice chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Izekeil Izang urged the beneficiaries to work hard towards making good results so as to justify the confidence the lawmaker has in them.
