Members of the Lakurawa terrorist group have reportedly fled Kebbi communities, following an onslaught by the troops of the Nigerian Military.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the terrorists had occupied some parts of Kebbi and Sokoto States, terrorising the residents.
On Friday, the insurgents had killed at least 15 people and rustled several cattle in Mera town, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
However, speaking to BBC Hausa service, the chairman of Augie local government Area, Yahaya Mohammed, said the military dislodged the terrorist from the council area and recovered the stolen cows.
“As I speak to you, these terrorists called Lakurawa are not in any part of Augie Local government. The military did a very great job by invading all the camps and dislodging them.
“Also, during the military operations, some cattle that were stolen from our people in Mera last Friday have been recovered.
“I can tell you authoritatively that those insurgents have been chased away, and our people can now sleep with their eyes closed,” Mr Mohammed said.
Corroborating the claim, village head of Mera, Bashir Isah, said there has been significant improvement in the security situation in the area.
“To be honest with you, we are beginning to see improvement in the security situation.
“People have been regaining confidence and gradually returning to their business.
“Since the governor got information of our situation, he has been doing everything possible to see that peace has returned to Mera.
“In fact, the military personnel have been sleeping together with us here and also going to the adjoining communities to wipe out the terrorists.
“And a lot of stolen cattle have been restored. It is therefore important that we come to the troops for their gallantry efforts,” Mr Isah said.
