Lagos Rugby Club, the oldest Rugby Club in the state, gained promotion to the Premier Division after finishing top of division two last year.
The Nigeria Rugby Federation (NRFF) has revealed that the South West Men’s Rugby League, which will run from April to July, will kick off today at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos. It disclosed that there would be a slight break during the Africa Bronze Cup in May and another break during Ramadan fast
NRFF, which revealed that last year’s edition witnessed many innovations, including the division of the competition into two divisions (four teams in the Premier division and three in division two), added that it would retain the format this year with one additional team in Division two.
Lagos Rugby Club, the oldest Rugby Club in the state, gained promotion to the Premier Division after finishing top of division two last year. They will face stiff competition from defending champions Cowrie RFC, runners up, Racing Rugby Club and the dark horses, Police Rugby Club.
Speaking ahead of the league games, captain of Lagos Rugby Club, Mohammed Salisu, said, “We are very glad to be in the premier division this year. We will do our very best to remain at the top flight. It was due to our determination last season that we qualified,” he said.
He revealed that Lagos Dragons are back in contention in Division two this season after a long spell away from competitive rugby due to disciplinary sanctions they suffered in 2015. Eight Lagos-based teams will contest the league, which is being organized by Friends of Rugby.
Also speaking on the league, Friends of Rugby founding member, Bandele Coker explained that it was necessary for the league to commence early, saying it would help the domestic players to be in top form ahead of the Africa Bronze Cup engagements in May.
