Stallions set for Commonwealth Games qualifiers
The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) has revealed that this year’s Super Cup match between Northern League winners, Barewa RFC and South West champions, Cowrie RFC, will hold in Abuja on February 18 at the Old Parade Ground, Garki Area 10 (Opposite International Conference Centre) Abuja.
According to the body, the one-day event, which will be used to determine the over all champions of the Nigerian Rugby League, will also be used to usher in the 2017 league session.
NRFF Technical Director, Olatunji Fasimoye, said the Super Cup would be full of excitement, as the two top rugby clubs will be battling it out in front of a large crowd.
Fasimoye added that the overseas-players interested in playing for the Rugby national team (Black Stallions) should make their self available in the Africa Cup 1C 15s International engagement in March and Africa Cup 7s in November, 2017, which, according to him, would serve as Commonwealth Games Qualifiers.
He noted that the Black Stallion 7s would be looking to repeat their fine form of 2013 when they qualified for Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games but were denied participation by the NOC.“We are looking forward to kicking off the 2017 campaign with our various programmes and tournaments.
“The Super Cup is always a great way to start the new season with the Northern and South-West League winners battling it out in a showpiece occasion in front of a big crowd. Looking around our various Leagues, we expect all clubs to be prepared going into the year’s campaign as we have very high expectation on the players judging by their performance last year in our various tournaments held,” he said.
