The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has sworn in about 2000 youths corps members for the 2022 Batch “C” Stream 1, orientation course.
The oath of allegiance was performed on Tuesday by Justice Hamza Muazu, who represented the Chief Judge of the FCT, Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf.
At the ceremony, the Director-General of NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Muhammad Fadah, said that one of the objectives of NYSC was the promotion of national unity and integration.
Represented by the FCT Coordinator, Abdul Suleman, Fadah said that their deployment away from their states of origin and their assemblage from diverse ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds, was significant.
“This policy will not only offer you the opportunity for a broader understanding of the country, but also entrench the culture of working together in an atmosphere filled with friendship, peace, harmony, and a shared vision of a great and prosperous Nigeria.
“Let me also remind you that the oath of allegiance you have taken today is significant, as it is expected to guide your conduct in the service year, as well as have an everlasting influence on your life after service.”
He reminded them that white-collar jobs were no longer readily available, and encouraged them to avail themselves of self-employment opportunities, offered through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, Programme.
The director-general urged them to choose from any of the skill areas, and make themselves available for the training, while the management of NYSC would continue to work with relevant stakeholders for the success of the programme.
Fadah also enjoined them to familiarise themselves with the provisions of the NYSC Act and the NYSC Bye-Laws.
He also implored them to sustain a high level of discipline and enthusiasm especially by remaining compliant with the camp rules and regulations.
“You must continue to distance yourselves from cultism, drug abuse and other social vices.
“I also urge you to avoid using social media for spreading fake news, fueling hatred and other negative purposes, but instead deploy the same for the promotion of national unity and development.”
He advised the youth corps members to be security conscious at all times, and to report any suspicious characters or activities around them to the appropriate authorities.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the three-week orientation course, which commenced on Nov. 2, would end on Nov. 22.
