The Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, led by Nuhu Ribadu, has intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking with the interception of over 250 containers of illicit drugs, including Tramadol and other dangerous substances, at various Nigerian ports.
This operation is a part of the government’s commitment to tackling the narcotics pandemic and safeguarding public health.
A multi-agency task force, coordinated by ONSA, spearheaded the operation.
The task force comprises the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS; Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Army, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA; the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, among others. The team is tasked with tracing the origins of the drugs, identifying the culprits, and ensuring the contraband is destroyed.
As part of the operation, the task force has been destroying narcotics from at least 30 containers daily. Beyond this immediate action, it is also developing strategic recommendations to prevent future occurrences and strengthen security measures at Nigeria’s ports and borders. These measures are expected to significantly reduce the influx of illicit substances and drive national security.
Navy Commodore Kingsley Kelechi Ogbonna, who played a pivotal role in the operation, affirmed the task force’s resolve to curb the spread of illicit substances. He stated, “The National Security Adviser is passionate about stopping the infiltration of dangerous drugs into the country because of their harmful impact on society.”
The initiative reflects the government’s recognition of the connection between drug abuse, violent crime, and insecurity.
By dismantling these narcotics networks, Nigeria is making strides in bolstering national security and protecting its citizens.
The destruction of the seized drugs marks the beginning of Mr Ribadu’s pledge to intensify efforts against drug trafficking and secure the nation’s ports and borders. This operation sets the stage for a broader campaign to combat the devastating impact of the drug trade on Nigeria.
