Osinbajo condemns Taraba massacre, orders deployment of extra battalion

The acting president, Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday ordered police reinforcement, deployment of extra military battalion and personnel of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to the troubled areas of Taraba.

Mr Osinbajo gave the order in Abuja while commiserating with victims of the recent violent attacks in a number of communities in the state where deaths were reported.

A statement issued by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Acting President on Media and Publicity, said that Mr Osinbajo condemned the attacks in the communities.

He promised that the perpetrators would be brought to book.

He commiserated with the people of the affected communities as well as the government and people of Taraba.

On Wednesday, the acting president summoned and held emergency meeting with top security officials and Gov. Darius Ishaku of Taraba.

Mr Osinbajo also ordered the provision and delivery of relief materials to the affected communities in Toffi, Mayo Daga, Mayo Sina, Tamiya, Kwara-Kwara, Tungan Lugere, Timjire, Nguroje and other villages in the hinterland of Mambilla Plateau.

The federal government has also intensified mediation efforts in its bid to reconcile opposing groups in the communal conflict.
