Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh has called for international protection, in light of the projected election victory for the right-wing religious camp of Israeli opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu.

Shhtayyeh asked the international community to “protect our people against aggressive Israeli policies after racist parties come to power in Israel,” in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The shift to the right is the “natural result of years of rising extremism and racism in Israeli society,” he argued, adding: “We had no illusions that the Israeli election would produce a partner for peace.”
